Bone Shaker Brown Ale – Moat Mountain Brewing Co,
The fall is an interesting term… I like to think of it as falling back in love with cool weather beers (browns, big beers, porters, stouts, etc). And we in New Hampshire have a lot to be thankful for since we live in a state with almost 50 breweries turning out awesome tasting products. Today, we concentrate on one of those breweries; Moat Mountain Brewing.
Moat Mountain Smoke House & Brewing Company is located at 3378 White Mountain Highway (Rt 16) in North Conway, NH. Their food is great and worth a visit. Although they still brew on premises where their eatery and original location are (smaller batch seasonals for the restaurant and growler fills), their newest brewery upgrade is a state-of-the-art “barn” and artfully done. This place is their main 20 barrel brewery created in 2013. They added the canning line in the following year. It is not open to the public though. Moat’s Bone Shaker Brown Ale is a year-round production beer. It is produced in 16 oz four packs. A pint glass does it justice with the right pouring style; just keep the head under control. A beautiful brown color and creamy head are the first signs of a great experience ahead. Malt greats your nose as you approach the first tasting. Touted as an English-style brown, this smooth biscuit malt and toasty grains are sincerely balanced between malt and hop with a slightly dry finish… English style. There is also a faint caramel and more bread as you continue your trip with this new friend. It never talks dirty and is polite to the end of travel.
At 5.4% ABV, Shaker will keep you coming back for more. But it’s the style that catches your attention. Being this is available all year, one might be willing to take it along on a summer hike or camp-out. It is balanced for the entire year if you think about it. BeerAdvocate.com gives this one a “very good” rating of 88 and a ‘Bros’ scoring of 94 out of 100 scoring. Most other contributors chime in with 4 to 4.5+ ratings. Most over at RateBeer.com agree as well.
Make sure and also try the other offerings from Moat Mt such as Iron Mike Pale Ale, Czech Pils, East Intervale IPA and Hell Yes! Helles Lager, all in 16 oz cans.
